Conversation with Stacey Heale

Digging deep on World Mental Health Day

I had a conversation with Stacey Heale this morning. Stacey and I have loads in common and will be recording a series of chats over the next few months.

Stacey is an author and academic. Her memoir, Now Is Not The Time For Flowers, is a beautiful exploration of grief following the death of her husband, Greg and, like Twelve Moons, is deeply a personal book.

Our chat today coincided with World Mental Health Day. We talked about how days like today can be tokenistic, but ultimately it has given us a platform on which to talk about mental health.

We discussed our own mental health and how hard it can be to seek support. We talked about how hard it can be as single parents to be vulnerable in front of our children, and the cost of trying to be everything to everyone all the time. We chatted about creative and professional achievements, and why looking shiny is not always the reality - behind the scenes balls are frequently being dropped.

This is an honest discussion about the reality of living with loss, parenting alone and trying to build beautiful lives for ourselves and our children. We talk about death and divorce and if these topics might feel hard for you today, please be gentle with yourselves if you join our conversation. I hope you enjoy listening. x
